Recently, we began testing new versions of search at FileTram. Based on the success of those tests, we’re rolling out a new version of search to everyone on the site beginning today. You now will be able to search for photos, videos and other types of files using our unique algorithm that gives 100% relevant results. Search results will continue to include new files each day.

FileTram search is a product of long and hard work of our team. Taking bigger search engines, including some good open source ones, that we could have used to power FileTram search results, was always an option. However, we decided that searches carried out on FileTram had a particular structure that only we could understand and optimize for. We wrote a crawler for the site, created an in-memory reverse index using both hashes and ternary tries and created a ranking system that scaled to return unique results for ~60 millions of files.

2. approximately 1 terabyte of free generated traffic each day;
3. average search query time of less than 30ms;
4. about 200,000 new files each day;
5. one of the most useful file search engines on the web.
